Philip L. (B.S. Met 63) and Marsha Dowd Endow Professorship in Engineering
The Philip and Marsha Dowd Professorship in Engineering is the most recent of a number of gifts that Phil and his wife, Marsha, have made to the university throughout the years. These have included gifts to the Materials Science and Engineering Department; establishment of the Philip L. and Marsha Dowd Teaching Fellowship in the College of Engineering; and a gift to the University Center to name the Dowd Conference Room. |

LtCol John Aloysius Dowd was born in Orange, New Jersey, on September 23, 1931. Jack, as he was to be called, was the only child of Margaret and Aloysius (Al) Dowd. During his formative years, he was raised in the predominantly Irish community of Kearny, New Jersey. He attended St. Cecelias Parochial Elementary School and Seton Hall Preparatory High School. |

John ODowd, Commercialisation Manager, University of Glasgow
John joined the Commercial Development team within Research and Enterprise in February 2000 from the Medicine Group at Edinburgh Research and Innovation, the Universitys industrial liaison organisation, where he had particular responsibility for the management of clinical research and the Universitys interaction with the local NHS Trusts. Johns main role at R&E is to work with staff of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to identify research-derived Intellectual Property with commercial potential; ensure that it gains adequate legal protection; and develop it in appropriate commercial contexts. This may involve licensing or company creation and subsequent spin-out from the University. John also has responsibility for managing the Veterinary Medicine Planning Unit team within R&E |

Dowd Memorial Chapel completed ~ 1940. Gift of Miss Mary A. Dowd of NYC. Cost was $178,000 including the first organ contract. The chapel is of gothic design 69 x 179 with a 45’ ceiling. The original ceiling was of cork - later painted - later replaced.
