George T. Dowd was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in the sport of baseball.
Dowd pitched and slugged his way to consecutive Most Valuable Player Awards in his junior and senior seasons, 1956 and 1957, and as a senior captain paced the Huskies in six pitching categories - including ERA at 1.62 - and topped the offensive column in doubles and triples. When Dowd was not on the hill, he was roaming the outfield and batting cleanup for Coach Tinker Connelly, who referred to Dowd as "one of the best ballplayers in Northeastern history." A rangy 62 righthander, Dowd baffled opposing batters with the combination of a blinding fastball and an offering of off-speed pitches. He was renowned for his powerful throwing arm, whether uncorked from centerfield or 60 feet. Newspaper accounts of Northeastern baseball games usually prefaced references to Dowd with the phrase "golden-armed." |

The Dowd Mountain Trail begins on the high plateau of the Uintah Mountains of northeast Utah. The trail passes through longleaf pine and juniper. Theres very little elevation gain, and the trail is OK for strong novice riders. The trail is half singletrack and half double-track. If a rider gets tired, theres a "bailout" graded road back from the midway lookout point.
