Mary Dowd Bears
Written by Steven Dowd
I live on a farm in the foothills of North Carolina within view of Pilot Mountain, an ancient guide to Indians and early settlers traveling the length and breath of the Appalachian Mountains. I find the area beautiful - given teenage children and a menagerie of horses, dogs and a cat - it is not always quiet!

I made my first mohair bear in 1994 and it was "love at first cut" working with the mohair material. It was not long before I started creating my own designs for bears. I love making both modern, whimsical bears and traditional old style teds. I hope they all look like they have a "story to tell."

My bears range in size from 5 inches to 22 inches. They are all original designs, fully jointed, and individually hand sewn. I use English or German mohair and the bears have either glass or antique boot button eyes. Each bear comes with a sewn in tag and a signed hang tag. Many are one of a kind or limited to very small editions.
