After many years in works management in the chemical industry (I have a professional qualification in industrial chemistry as opposed to the pharmaceutical variety) I formed a chemical recycling company, Solrec Limited, in Heysham, Morecambe, Lancashire. After 13 years as Managing Director with sales approaching ?4 million I sold out. Since then the company has continued to progress and has recently been sold to a large German cement company.
Shortly after leaving Solrec Ltd. I was asked to manage a MBO from Shell (UK) Ltd called Biocatalysts Ltd. based in Pontypridd, S.Wales. This evolved into a partial MBO and partial MBI when a number of Investors contributed to the capital of the Company. Biocatalysts Ltd, as its name implies, is in the biochemical industry specialising in enzyme (natures catalysts) manufacture. At the time of the Buy Out the company was losing serious money due to high R&D spend and sales that had not come up to expectations. After 4 years the highly profitable company was sold on.
As you will see this experience in building up a new company and rescuing a company in financial difficulties suggests I know a little bit about what makes a company tick.
