Philip L. (B.S. Met 63) and Marsha Dowd Endow Professorship in Engineering

The Philip and Marsha Dowd Professorship in Engineering is the most recent of a number of gifts that Phil and his wife, Marsha, have made to the university throughout the years. These have included gifts to the Materials Science and Engineering Department; establishment of the Philip L. and Marsha Dowd Teaching Fellowship in the College of Engineering; and a gift to the University Center to name the Dowd Conference Room. Phil Dowd came to Carnegie Mellon intending to become a physicist but soon switched his major to metallurgy. Toward the end of his undergraduate years he began taking some non-credit evening courses in the fledgling computer science field, which was just getting established at Carnegie Mellon. After a stint in the Army, he went on to pursue his masters degree in business administration at the University of Chicago.

In 1969, armed with an engineering degree, an M.B.A., and a keen interest in computing, Dowd joined the five-person staff of a tiny computer software firm, Catallactics Corporation. Ten years later that company was acquired by SunGard Data Systems. Dowd built his career with SunGard, now a giant in the financial services software industry. He is currently a corporate senior vice president.

Dowd is chairman of the College of Engineering Advisory Council, a member of the universitys Computing Services Advisory Board and Technology Transfer subcommittee, and has been a trustee of the university since 1995. He was recently awarded Carnegie Mellons 1999 Service Award.

At the chair reception this past April, the Dowds began what seemed to be a serious presentation. But it quickly became apparent that they had joined in the traditional roasting of the recipient when they contributed a little something to "help Pradeep live up to his reputation."

The Philip and Marsha Dowd Engineering Seed Fund was established in 2001 through a generous gift to the College of Engineering (CIT) from the Dowds. The fellowship grant program, administered through ICES, awards a grant to a CIT graduate student in the second or third year of his/her graduate studies. The objective of the fund is to provide support for graduate students working on cutting edge research projects for which traditional sources of funding may not be readily available. Students receiving support will be referred to as Dowd-ICES fellows and will be required to present a seminar to the Carnegie Mellon community on the results of the work.
