When my Dowd ancestors came to the US they didn't voluntarily drop the O'. Immigration wrote it down as O. so O became a middle initial |

Hi there,
My great-grand mother was Lizzie Dowds from Benroe, near Killybegs, this is where all the Dowds of Killybegs came from. There was just one family and they have spead all over the world, there are members in England, Tennesses, Alabama and of course Killybegs. There are many people round the Killybegs area that do not have the Dowds name that are related to us, |

An interesting site. This family has certainly spread far and wide. I am descended from Patrick Doody and Catherine Mahoney (or Maloney, not sure which) - my great-great-grandparents. Their son, Edward, and his wife Mary Power, emigrated to Australia in the 1860's. |

Colum O'Dowd
Co Meath, Ireland
|
It's great to see so many O'Dowds/Dowds with an interest in their name and history. I have a database of all O'Dowds/Dowds that were born, married or died in Meath, Wicklow and Dublin from the late 1700's to date.
I am currently putting these into their family trees. If anyone has any information relating to these areas I would be very grateful. |

Amazing how many people have dropped the O from their name. I'm quite proud to have the full name although it's a nightmare spelling it over the phone. Normally they ask for Mr. Odwood. |

Pretty cool site. I took a trip to County Cavan, Cootehill, just a few years ago. My Grandfather was born there. Even with the EU building new by-ways in Ireland, it's still an incredible challenge navigating through the country side. We banged up the rental car a bit, but it was well worth it. |

This site was such a wonderful treasure trove of information on members of my family and family history. As I am trying to trace my ancestors before they imigrated to Australia (not always willingly) the information I can get here is invaluable. Thanks |
